15+ years of structural engineering, concept to construction

Clayton is an experienced structural engineer and a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ). He enjoys identifying and delivering each project's stakeholder vision through innovative design, and has delivered projects from concept to construction across the retail, residential, education, health, industrial, aged care and commercial sectors.

Multistorey

Structural design for a $1.5B mixed-use development by Kokoda Property Group on the Brisbane River. Five towers between 10 and 21 storeys over a shared podium and two levels of basement carparking, with a mix of precast and in-situ vertical elements and post-tensioned and conventionally reinforced floor plates.

Structural design of an 8-storey building over 3 basements. A striking 7-storey steel elliptical diagrid frames the atrium, alongside concrete vertical elements with conventionally reinforced and post-tensioned floor plates.

Structural design of a 7-storey aged care building on a sloping site, with in-situ concrete vertical elements and post-tensioned floor plates.

Four residential buildings from 10 to 12 storeys over a shared podium and 2-storey basement. Challenges included resolving unbalanced retention, hydrostatic uplift and construction up to a lake edge.

Structural design of a 6-storey apartment block with up to 7m of unbalanced retention, built with blockwork and in-situ concrete vertical elements and post-tensioned floor plates.

Education

Structural design of the $95M foundation building for the USC Petrie campus, including in-situ concrete vertical elements, post-tensioned floors and a steel-framed roof and façade.

Structural design of a 3-storey general learning area building — structural steel-framed roof, post-tensioned suspended slab, masonry walls, concrete columns and slabs on grade with high-level footings.

Structural design of a 3-storey building including general learning areas, an automotive workshop and laboratory spaces.

Structural design of a suspended pool apron, balance tank and support structures tying into existing classroom buildings.

Design of two new teaching facilities replacing the existing Dominic Centre and tying into the adjacent Aquinas building, featuring an open entry area and a brick arched colonnade.

A new 3-storey GLA with an elevated walkway link to the existing GLA — structural steel-framed roof, post-tensioned suspended slab, masonry walls, concrete columns and slabs on grade with high-level footings.

Structural design of a steel portal-framed multi-purpose hall with integrated GLAs and foyer.

Commercial

Design of a new ALDI store structure, with shallow footings supporting concrete slabs on ground, precast concrete walls and a steel-framed roof.

Design of a new store structure at the Rockhampton shopping centre. Founded on micro piles due to boulders present in uncontrolled fill, with suspended footings and ground slabs supporting precast concrete walls and a steel-framed roof.

A $65M retail town centre including Coles, a detached childcare centre and numerous specialty tenancies. Met Stockland's carbon reduction targets using fibre-reinforced footings, timber framing where compliant, S-grade reinforcement and low-carbon concrete, with shallow footings, precast wall panels and a steel-framed roof.

An extension to an existing medical centre and several specialty tenancies at the Baringa retail centre — steel-framed walls and roof on shallow concrete footings.

Structural design for an administration building with an ambitious, sleek roof blending with the landscape — steel trusses on concrete columns and a combination of shallow and deep foundations.

A $10M revitalisation of the heritage-listed structure, upgrading internal rehearsal spaces, extending the passenger lift and adding a walkway suspended off the existing lift to open up underutilised parts of the building.

Industrial

Detailed analysis of an existing steel-framed food processing facility, reviewing capacity for in-ceiling services added since construction and potential additional load from solar panels.

Extension to an existing steel portal-framed warehouse on shallow foundations.

Structural design for a medium-sized industrial development of 8 buildings for storage and retail use, framed with precast concrete walls, reinforced concrete suspended and on-ground slabs, and steel-framed roofs.

Residential

Structural design for a multi-storey residence on Stradbroke Island — a mix of timber and concrete for the 2-storey main residence, and steel and timber framing for a 3-storey detached dwelling and viewing platform.

Structural design of a bespoke secondary dwelling — shallow concrete footings supporting timber stud walls and a timber-framed roof.

A townhouse-style development providing 40 social housing dwellings, framed with a mix of lightweight steel framing, masonry load-bearing walls, reinforced suspended concrete slabs and a raft slab on piles.
